Eminent Person Study

One of the pillars of the TALONS Program that encompasses both English, and Social Studies, the Eminent Person Study is an opportunity for learners to discover, research, and produce creative and expository work based on the life of a person they consider Eminent, or Notable.

The Major Components of the Study are:

• The Introductory Post
  • Introduce the class to your selected Eminent Person in a the form of a blog post. Use the post as an opportunity to synthesize and summarize biographical information that is relevant to your EP's achievement. Begin to characterize their work and influence in their field, and how their legacy is felt today.

• The Practice Interview

  • As an introduction to the type of communication required to seek out and report on primary source information, TALONS will be interviewing parents and adults in the extended learning community on the broad topic of Life and Learning.
    • It Takes a Village - Blog post gathering the fruits of the last incarnation of this assignment.
    • 2011 PLN Practice Interviews - Storify collecting the social media happenings of the practice interview's foray into the online TALONS community.
    • 2012 TALONS Practice Interviews - Storify collecting the saga of the practice interview, as well as the visual quad-synthesis of the learning experience.

• The Interview

  • TALONS learners are asked to locate and interview an 'expert' on their chosen Eminent Person, and share the results of their discussion in a representation on their blog.

• The Speech

  • Grade Nine speeches are expected to be 6-8 minutes in length, and to be written from the perspective of a person (or entity) who may have known their person, while the grade ten speeches are written and delivered from the perspective of the Eminent Person, and are brief dramatic monologues (2-3').

• The Learning Centre

• The Learning Center is a representation of learning about an Eminent Person that is encouraged to involve its audience's various senses, and dimensions beyond the conventional posterboard.
